SHOSTAKOVICH : LADY MACBETH (KATERINA IZMAILOVA)

SHOSTAKOVICH: Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, an opera in four acts
Based on a short story by Nikolay Leskov, Shostakovich gives a sympathetic view of a provincial merchant's wife who is at the centre of a whirl of passion, greed and brutality. Its earthy approach to sex, graphic language and extreme violence made it an immediate critical and popular success in Russia in the 1930s, until Stalin saw the production. The resulting subjugation of individual creative freedom of all the arts in Soviet Russia is a matter of history. Shostakovich never completed another opera, but he revised this one under the title Katerina Izmailova.
