The libretto is yet again by Piave; it is based on a historical drama by Byron (The Two Foscari).
The recording I own is first on the Wikipedia list: from 1951, conducted by Giulini, with Carlo Bergonzi in the tenor role; this production has Placido Domingo as the old Doge of Venice, a baritone (as in his Simon Boccanegra, which likewise moved around the northern hemisphere).
